France 2020

With essentially all competitions cancelled for the rest of the year and travel bans across most countries, the prospect of being able to go kayaking abroad seemed a distant possibility. However, despite this, I was lucky enough to be able to get a few weeks training in the south of France at the feature Makinito. As water levels were on the lower side and my new boat still being very shiny, I limited loops and spaces. This also encouraged me to work on weaker, higher scoring moves and refine cartwheels and splits which should allow more linking of moves in the future. Training in France was awesome - being able to focus on training without competition pressures and long lines, learn new moves and just enjoy a change of scenery from Nottingham. Over our own mini training camp, I worked on lunars, phonics monkies and woo trickies, aiming to push to the higher moves. Unfortunately, changes in UK travel corridors meant out trip had to be cut short with a dash to the ferry...

It was a mix of excitement as if I was a child on the night before Christmas day, and nerves like it was the night before final exams and of course you'd done no revision. When the heat list was published, I was in the second heat, but last - so I would be the final woman competing (mirroring our pre Selections Burners competition). It was nice to have a later start which meant it wasn't such a ridiculously early get up. Although it was cold, I never like paddling, particularly competing, in dry trousers as I feel more restricted, so shorts it was, but with long thermals. Weirdly it felt exactly like normal - getting on at the tree, a quick few jumps on the banks, and then flat water warm up with a few cartwheels, and a tricky woo to force myself to...

PRSYC Opening

Think back about six or seven years, and I had just made the switch from sprint flat water racing to white water in search of the thrill and adrenaline. Now, after having returned from the Freestyle World Championships, I am still with the same club that I began the journey with. For as long as I can remember, our club, Wychavon Kayak and Canoe Club, has been predominately based at the Riverside Youth Centre in Pershore - but with limited access due to lack of suitable facilities. The majority of time we would simply just get dressed in the car park. However, it is now a very different story. On Friday 16th October, along with Harriet Baldwin MP, I was invited as guest of honour t cut the ribbon and open the new extension at the centre.
