PRSYC Opening

Think back about six or seven years, and I had just made the switch from sprint flat water racing to white water in search of the thrill and adrenaline. Now, after having returned from the Freestyle World Championships, I am still with the same club that I began the journey with.

For as long as I can remember, our club, Wychavon Kayak and Canoe Club, has been predominately based at the Riverside Youth Centre in Pershore - but with limited access due to lack of suitable facilities. The majority of time we would simply just get dressed in the car park.

However, it is now a very different story.

On Friday 16th October, along with Harriet Baldwin MP, I was invited as guest of honour t cut the ribbon and open the new extension at the centre. Despite a few hiccups along the way, we now had our very own boat and kit store, changing rooms and showers that we could access after trips. They may only seem like small things, but these facilities will help us run more sessions for a wider variety of groups and accommodate all weathers.

This evening itself was awesome, and very surreal. I did a small demonstration on the river, before a quick change and the business end of the evening begun. With speeches done and few photos, all that was left to do was cut the ribbon!

Then all that was left to do was to open it to the public officially on 31st October, with a Halloween fun day.

The centre truly showed how great it is with lots of activities going on and a real buzz around the place. Kayaking, canoeing, bouncy castle, tale tennis, music studio, skate park, arts and crafts - everything was going on.

In addition, during the private opening, it was announced that £200,000 of the £250,000 needed for the new white water course approximately 100 metres downstream had been donated by British Canoeing and the Avon Navigation Trust! I am thoroughly excited about this new opportunity as it should mean that so many more individuals will get the chance to try freestyle and other disciplines in the area.

Both WKCC and PRSYC's continued support has allowed me to be where I am today, and for that I am grateful!
