Uganda - Mzungu Malulu

(Otherwise titled “crazy white person”)

Even from day 1, we quickly lived up to this connotation. Whether it being ending up swimming in the Nile as a result of ‘legs out till take out’ or surfing Malulu itself, our time in Uganda has had some crazy adventures. We even hired a car for a Super Hole and Special day, squeezing in lots of paddling, and also trying more local cuisine.

Fun fact: Emma in Uganda is a male name which also leads to rather funny and some what confusing conversations.

Now approaching the wet season, the storms are definitely getting crazier, with more intense rain and lightning bolts less than 20m away! However, the rain hasn’t stopped paddling, proving our true British nature. But, the rain may have compromised our boat tying ability, as arriving at the get in for Special, and not being able to open the door due to the boats having slid so far to the left.

The weather has also been relatively crazy with a solar eclipse (which admittedly we did miss, despite being sat outside on the side of the river overlooking Special), plenty of storms, and even a 5.7 earthquake while we were in Jinja. This was a first for all of us and largely shocked by the lound rumbling, flexing windows and powerful shaking of the ground. (Although initially thinking it was a earthquake, we couldn’t believe it, as Uganda not known for earthquakes, and so quickly put it down to a washing machine upstairs!)

We have also had some pretty ‘malulu’ times at Malulu itself. This included sunset sessions under a very impressive orange sky, dotted with white clouds and swallows. This soon turned into an impromptu night session, which was soon cut short as I snapped my paddle and had to C1 it back to shore. Even at the night, the brightness of the stars and moon combined with absence of light pollution, illuminate the water enough to be able to see relatively clearly even on cloudy nights.

On the Lemon, life has been more chilled kind of crazy, but with jet skis and kayaks, there have also been some very exciting sessions. We also got the chance for a couple of sessions on club which was awesome to switch up the waves and try new moves too.

It has also been great catching up with the guys I met last year, and out at Worlds and also meet lots of new people too. Whether we are paddling with them or just chilling on the bank, they are great fun. Amos even had a go in our boats and his paddling has progressed a lot, despite taking a swim after surfing.

All in all it has been pretty crazy here and as with all freestyle kayaking there have been some pretty mad crashes and big take outs, especially when learning new moves!
